It is with great sadness that I am writing this to inform you all of the sad passing of Rodney Cranwell.
Rodney was a Past-President of the BFBA (May 1987-May 1989), he joined the association in 1952 and served on the Executive Committee from 1981 through to 1989 and continued to be a staunch supporter of the Association, ably assisted by Daphne his wife.
Rodney and Daphne rarely missed any of our larger events and could always be found in the canteen making sure competitors, stewards and everybody else involved with the event was well fed and watered.
During my time as President I knew I could always rely on Rodney for sound advice and a historical point of view. I regularly asked him to say Grace at the dinners that he attended as I always enjoyed the Farriery and Blacksmith wording he would use.
Rodney was also a founder member of British Artist Blacksmiths Association (BABA) and I am sure they will be feeling the loss of the gentle and kind man as much as we all are.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Daphne and family at this sad time.
My Anvil and Hammer lay declined
My Bellows have quite lost their wind
My vice in the dust all laid
My coal is spent my Iron gone
My Nails are drove my work is done
My Soul to heaven is gone.
Cliff Barnes, AWCF
