BFBA Farrier Focus, 29th September 2013.

For anyone involved, or simply those that care passionately about the future of training in the farriery industry in the UK, the last few months have been unsettling and worrying. The well documented extremely poor result of the the OFSTED inspection has left the industry reeling. We are all aware of the concerns highlighted in the report and the consequences of such an assessment. However, it is now time to move on, lessons have been learnt and the future of farriery training is looking promising.

On Sunday afternoon at the BFBA Farrier Focus event a positive, informative, presentation by Kathy Kissick (Head of Veterinary Nursing and Farriery at Myerscough College) brought the audience up to date with recent developments and how the new 'system' will work. The line of communication between College, Apprentice and ATF; the responsibilities of each; 'Safeguarding'; the AWCF as a requirement for new ATFs; compulsory CPD for all ATFs, the restriction of two apprentices per ATF; the training of all ATFs and 'Farriery Placement Officers' are just a few of the areas discussed.

Following the presentation the 'floor' was opened to questions for the panel consisting of representatives from the three Colleges, FRC, WCF, and BFBA. The 'question time' highlighted areas of concern, areas requiring further consideration and many positive comments were made.

This presentation was encouraging, factual and reassuring. However it would be fair to say that the attendance was disappointing. Two dozen ATFs alone cannot represent the views of all the ATFs in the country. It is your chance to provide feedback and make comments - you cannot complain if you have not made yourself heard.

3 'Training Days for ATFs' are being held in the coming months. Be involved, book your space now.
