Reiki and Horses

Carmen O’Connor MCThA, Reiki Master Teacher & Practitioner, was recently featured in Horse Health Magazine for her work with horses and Reiki.

"Reiki is a natural form of energy work which helps alleviate pain on various levels within animals and humans alike. If a horse’s natural energy is blocked or out of balance in any way, then signs of distress may appear. These can include stress, nervousness, anxiety, lack of (or excess) energy, poor discipline, pain, injury, behavioural problems etc - which can also then cause knock-on effects to the rest of the herd. By working with Reiki, positive energy flows into the horse so that any imbalance or negative energy can be dissipated, and balance can be encouraged and restored.

Every horse has an anatomy and a physiology both of which are looked after by farriers and vets, etc accordingly. However, they also have an energy system (as do we humans) and it is this integral system of the horse that is often overlooked, but is that in which Carmen works to help restore balance for the horse.

Carmen has been working in tandem with Farrier, Rory Morgan, for the past 18 months with various equines and the results and benefits have been amazing.

Rory says of Carmen’s treatment “It was nice to shoe such a relaxed Ambrose after his Reiki session with Carmen. During his 1st couple of shoeings Ambrose was quite a stressed and excitable horse. I would certainly recommend Carmen’s Reiki treatment for horses. Carmen has such an aura about her and this is a totally natural treatment.”

He adds “From my work perspective I have noticed the following:

• When Carmen has treated the horse immediately before I start a shoeing the horse is much more relaxed, amiable and so much easier to work with. Therefore, the effort I have to exert is reduced dramatically. I can get the shoes on more quickly and efficiently, especially when working with troubled or difficult equines.

• With Carmen’s presence during the shoeing of damaged, injured, stressed or fearful horses, they seem to trust the process and are more accepting of what might usually be a difficult shoeing.

• The psychological and mental wellbeing of the horse is taken care of during this time and so what might have been a stressful experience for the horse becomes one not to be feared then or in the future.

• Some of the equines even sleep during the shoeings – which is staggering!”

Rory continues; “Carmen has a natural understanding that each horse is an individual and she is open to learning from and working with us as farriers. She understands ‘no hoof, no horse’ and is respectful of the work we do.

So by working together we are able to encourage and help the horse through difficult treatment and experiences and so complement each others work, purely for the benefit of the horse.”

Carmen says other major benefits of her treatment include:-

Accelerated rehabilitation from injury or recovery from illness or trauma; pain relief; reduced anxiety and depression; increased relaxation and/or calmness which contributes to further healing; the encouragement of more balanced behaviour; and greater confidence - all of which can contribute to helping the horse attain peak performance and a greater state of wellness. Reiki can help to settle new broodmares; pacify a horse prior to unusual situations such as travel, sales or a new environment; release fear resulting from poor treatment or cruelty; and give comfort and help to a horse, during or after bereavement.

Case Study – Ambrose

Carmen explains; “One particular horse I have worked with over the past 18 months, alongside Rory Morgan, has suffered in many ways. He was initially a rescue case from cruel treatment of his previous owner and so initially took time to gain trust in his new care. To begin with he received remedial farriery, a huge amount of patience, understanding and loving care from his current owner, continued farriery from Rory and Reiki treatments from me.

At first he was unsure of the Reiki and so we took our time and built the treatments up from 15 minutes and his owner standing with him. He will now stand for as long as I can work with him and without his owner, and he really is now coming into his own.

However, along the way Ambrose has endured various difficulties such as stress due to a muscle tear injury in his neck, the effects of which travelled over his back into his hind quarter. I had picked up on a distress in the horse during the Reiki treatment and so when Rory came to pick up his back leg he was aware he was stressed upon it and so was able to move and work quickly and carefully in relation to this problem when shoeing him.

On another occasion, Rory had to burst out a corn which would normally be an incredibly painful experience for any horse. However, having a Reiki treatment prior to and during this farriery treatment, Rory was able to work through the bursting and Ambrose didn’t even flinch during it. He stood still and bravely took the treatment without any jumping, agitation or stress. Again, Rory was able to work quickly and efficiently causing minimum amount of pain for the horse. This particular treatment also facilitated Rory being safer and less likely to receive accidental injury whilst working because the horse was so relaxed and in less pain and therefore didn’t move off or jump about during the shoeing.

I believe and have noticed that by working with Reiki in humans and horses over the last 6 years Reiki seems to ‘take the pain away’ on whatever level – whether mental, physical or emotional. Horses are naturally drawn to this treatment; they can’t read about whether it works or not, they just feel it and let it happen – that speaks for itself in my eyes.”
