Healthy hooves help veteran horses enjoy retirement

(added 20th November 2011)

Good hooves help horses live active, healthy lives into advanced old age, and so it is to wonder that hoof care is a top priority at The Horse Trust’s Home of Rest for Horses, which caters for the retirement needs of over 100 horses, donkeys and ponies.

For the past 12 months, staff at The Horse Trust in England’s Chiltern Hills have been using Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate, a supplement designed to strengthen the hoof, improve the coat and ensure healthy connective tissue, on selected elderly horses with problem feet.

Tessa is a good example. The 14.1hh grey mare is 32 years old and has been at the Home of Rest for Horses since 1999. “Tessa’s generally fit and well, but she’s had problems with seedy toe for the last three years,” says the Trust’s Chief Executive, Jeanette Allen.

Seedy toe, also known as white line disease, is characterised by a separation of the inner zone of the hoof wall, resulting in a cavity which fills with crumbling horn and dirt and often leads to infection.

“Since being on Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate, there’s been a big improvement in the condition of Tessa’s hooves,” she adds.

The Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate trial was begun by outgoing CEO, Brigadier Dr. Paul Jepson, who remains with The Horse Trust as a specialist policy consultant. “The horses were selected on the basis of poor quality horn and low hoof growth rate,” he explains. “They’re all retired residents of The Home of Rest for Horses and vary enormously in size, breed and conformation.

“Without exception, there’s been a noticeable improvement not only in their hoof growth and quality but also in their coats and maintenance of bodyweight, which can be problematic in old horses.”

Welcoming the results, Karen Zetsche, European Sales Representative of the supplement’s manufacturer, Life Data Labs, Inc. (Life Data Labs) said, “we’re delighted that The Horse Trust’s experience bears out other independent research showing that horses with hoof horn defects develop improved growth and more stable hooves when given Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate.

“The Trust’s work goes way beyond caring for the horses at its sanctuary. It’s become the largest provider of equine welfare and horse research grants in the UK, and so it’s a privilege for us to be able to help a little in return.”

The oldest horse charity in the world, The Horse Trust was originally established in 1886 to help the working horses of London. Today it is dedicated to the welfare of the horse worldwide, to scientific research, to the education of horse owners, riders and trainers and to the continuing care of the horses at its sanctuary.

The Trust depends on donations to fund its work and also relies on volunteers to help out both in the yard and in its offices. As a result of the current financial crisis, it is more in need of donations than ever. Reduced income has forced a suspension of its new grant programme, meaning that urgent research cannot be funded.

Information about donations and volunteering can be found on The Horse Trust’s website: www.horsetrust.org.uk

Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate was created over 30 years ago by Dr Frank Gravlee, founder of Alabama-based Life Data Labs, to promote healthy dermal tissue in horses. He tested blood collected from hundreds of horses to determine which nutrients were lacking in horses with poor-quality hooves. Life Data Labs has been manufacturing Farrier’s Formula® since 1979, and the supplement has been the number one recommended product by US farriers for 12 consecutive years. New Products from Horseshoes Direct

(added 7th November 2011)

First of all we would like to say a very special thank you, to all the farriers who have supported us at our launch and have given some good honest and positive feedback.  We couldn’t do this without you.

Your comments have been terrific.

The most common response by far has been that it is nice to see a good quality shoe that you can work with at the right price.

And we are happy to admit, that the shoes are quick and easy to fit, the clips are good, the nail holes are coarser and tighter and there is no need to work and mess about with these hinds to make them into left or right handed shoes, it’s already done!

No one can make a shoe which is perfect for everyone (every farrier looks at things in their own individual way) but like you have said, we can get the basics right, get the consistent quality right and keep the price down, so that you the farrier knows what you are getting every time, this we believe we have done.

All starting from under £20.00 a box!

You don’t have to buy 50+ boxes of our quality Concave shoes to get the best discount available.

All we have done from the start is ask you to try them and then compare them to other similar shoes on the market, LOOK AT THE QUALITY AND THE PRICE and then decide….. it’s that simple.

And now some more good news, we now stock Save Edge Rasps, along with Heller rasps, J.Blurton Bar shoes, Mustad and Derby Nails, Equilibrium shoes, Vettec products, Aprons, Studs, carbide pins and quality Concave shoes, all at amazing low prices.

Just call us on 01909 566822 or even better, if you happen to be in the area  or passing through , come in and see us,

Thank you all once again.

We are open: Monday to Friday 8.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. and Saturdays 8.00 a.m. - 12.00 p.m.

Mustad Hoofcare Commercial Operation Restructure

(added 17th October 2011)

The Mustad Hoofcare Group has announced today a restructuring of its commercial operation.

The commercial responsibilities for the European region (including Middle East and Africa) and the Asia region have been combined and Remco Van Der Linden has been appointed to lead this extended region. Mustad will establish a distribution centre in the Netherlands, which will be the main base for Van Der Linden. Remco has grown up in the industry, building the successful Delta business in the US together with his father Loet. Since Delta joined the Mustad Group in 2008, he has successfully led the transition into a joint Delta Mustad team and managed the US commercial operations.

Another key element of this restructuring is the combination of the commercial responsibilities for North America and Latin America. Juan Carlos Agudelo will take charge of the new extended region, based in Minnesota. Agudelo, who is already in charge of the Latin-American region, comes into this new role from an impressive track record over his 17 years career in the industry. He has been commercial director at Emcoclavos, built up the successful Mustad Mexico operations and over the last few years been leading the Mustad Latin American commercial team to a clear market leadership.

“As the world leader in hoofcare products, including horseshoes, nails, rasps and tools, we have the duty to continuously look for ways to improve our production, distribution and market presence, as well as to reinvent ourselves”, say Hans and Clarin Mustad, owners of Mustad Hoofcare.

“We are very confident that these organizational changes will further strengthen our ability to compete and maintain our leading position for the future" added Petter Binde, Mustad Hoofcare co-CEO, responsible for the group' Sales & Marketing

Life Data Hoof Disinfectant™

Destroys Harmful Hoof-Eating Microbes

Life Data Hoof Disinfectant™ is a safe and effective topical disinfectant clinically proven to kill the bacteria and fungi that cause hoof problems such as white line disease and thrush. Life Data Hoof Disinfectant™ not only kills these hoof-eating microbes on the surface of the hoof, but penetrates deep within the hoof capsule to destroy these microbes at the very foundation of the invasion. The active ingredient in Life Data Hoof Disinfectant™ is a tamed iodine solution that is delivered into the hoof capsule by a highly penetrating base of tea tree oil.

The Right Step®

Hoof Conditioner and Dressing

The Right Step® hoof conditioner uses natural resins and plant extracts to preserve the correct moisture balance within the hoof capsule, promoting a healthy, pliable hoof without the greasy residue of petroleum or tar based products. The moisture barrier created by The Right Step® repels environmental moisture while retaining natural hoof fluids. Yucca plant extract, an ingredient in The Right Step®, binds with ammonia to reduce its harmful effects.

Swift Racing Nail – Designed to Perform

(added 16th March 2011)

Mustad is proud to introduce the new SWIFT® racing nail.

Developed through a close collaboration with farriers specialized in racing disciplines, Swift® meets the specific needs currently expressed by racing professionals.

Swift® features:

• An extra slim shank, especially appropriate for thin hoof walls. This generate less damage to the hoof wall, in a segment where hooves are exposed to a higher shoeing frequency
• Sufficient shank length, offering the option to nail both higher and lower
• A short neck, ideal for thin shoes
• A crown on the head, optimizing drive and tightening

Swift® offers a better fit with racing shoes, particularly steel shoes. It represents an ideal match for the St. Croix Forge Concorde shoes (both steel and aluminium) as well as many other aluminium racing shoes.

The competitive advantage of the Swift® relies upon its unique combination of head and shank that no other brand can offer in the racing segment.

On top of that, extensive testing prior to the official market launch has highlighted specific points of strength for Swift®, among which the most notable ones are the excellent durability and resistance to wear, the shape allowing for different styles of nailing, especially important on thin or fragile hoof walls, and the ease of driving.

Sizes: 00 –0
Packaging: 250 pcs–500 pcs.
Introduction date: January 2011
Ideal to use with: St. Croix Forge Concorde

The Versatile Shoe for Leisure and Sport

(added 16th March 2011)

The new Mustad LIBERO is a 3/4 fullered all-round horseshoe based on feedback received on our very successful LB range. We like to think of it as an upgrade on our base range, making it suitable for most leisure and sport purposes with a wide variety of sizes and sections. It has been designed thanks to the collaboration of an extended farriers team, formed by eminent specialists from France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland.

The main objective of our expert team has been to respect as much as possible the natural shape of the hoof, providing the best support and protection for the horse while making farriers’ life easier when shoeing.

Unique features for the better of the horse:

Even if some models give a somewhat symmetrical feel, the new Libero is, as traditionally with Mustad, a left and right shoe. The outside branch is clearly marked in the fuller and is always slightly longer with the nail holes punched a fraction coarser for optimum fitting and nailing on. The
bents of the inside and outside branches follow the physiological shape of most European breeds.

A moderate form of sole relief now starts 1mm after the white line. This ensures that no part of the sole will be weight bearing without increasing the risk of a stone lodging between the shoe and the sole.

Unique Nail Hole & Fuller Design:

We have learned from experience that as much as 50% of the shoe can be worn away during one shoeing cycle.

The consequence of this is that the top half of the nail hole should not be relied upon for shoe retention. We have therefore redesigned the crease and the nail hole in order to guarantee that the nail will always fully seat at the bottom half of the nail hole in combination with Mustad nails.

The V-fuller fits seamlessly with most European style standard and long neck nails.

Nevertheless we strongly recommend to use it with Mustad Concave or EXL nails for which the shoe have been specifically machine-punched.

A broad range, a better steel

Although we have retained the traditional character in our model range, we have decided to offer subtle section-to-size variation within the traditional categories of 20x8mm, 22x8mm or 25x8mm.

Special attention has gone into sourcing our steel. Our choice of steel grade gives you the right balance between shape-ability on the anvil and durability underneath the hoof. With very low ontent of Carbon and Manganese, we are able to retain our shape-ability even after cooling down in water.

Range Summary -

Range: Side and toe-clipped, fronts and hinds
Sizes 4x0 -4
Introduction date: May 2011
Ideal to use with:EXL and Concave nails

Equi-Librium Aluminium - Balance in Motion

(added 15th March 2011)

Since its introduction, the Equi-Librium horseshoe has become the premier choice for top sport horses, and for anyone who wishes to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injuries.

Now Mustad is proud to unveil the Equi-Librium Aluminum—equal in performance with signicantlyless weight. When a fraction of a second can make the difference between winning and losing, the Equi-Librium Aluminum provides a distinct advantage. Equi-Librium Aluminum shoes are 65% lighter than steel shoes, but their design makes them hold up as well as steel.

A Revolution in Horseshoe Design

Unlike most aluminum shoes, the Equi-Librium Aluminum does not employ a steel insert. Extensive testing shows that Equi-Librium shoes without steel inserts have significantly better wear patterns, preserving the design advantages for the entire life of the shoe.

With the same superb features as steel but at a much lower weight, the Equi- Librium Aluminum is ideal. It is rounded in the toe in 2 directions:sideways and in the direction of the toe, to ease the process of hoof-unrollmentin all directions.

The branches are concaved to make it lighter in weight and to assure that sand and dirt can easily fall out of the shoe. The end of the branches are kept full, to provide optimal supportwhile landing and to maintain enough surface for stud holes. There is ´sole relief´on the hoof surface of the shoe in order to prevent sole bruises in the toe.

Less risk of injury

The Equi-Librium horseshoe represents a new approach that is proven to reduce load and the risk of injury in horses. The design is informed by rigorous scientific research undertaken at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands, as well as the input and field testing of some of the world’s most experienced farriers. These investigations demonstrate that the unique anatomy and habits of a horse in motion can be enhanced by an intelligent shoe — one that works with the horse. The Equi-Librium is that shoe: it is uniquely suited to enhance the anatomy and natural motion of a horse -especially during peak performance.

(added 1st March 2011)

Richard Ash have brought out a new version of their training shoe, the Easyfit Race, which matches Victory aluminium plates in Sizing, Shape, Section and Nail Holes.

Racing farriers are already using both types in many of the top yards in the country, both Flat and National Hunt, and finding that the combination makes both shoeing and ordering a lot simpler.

The Easyfit Race is made from standard concave steel. Sizes 3 and 4 are in an 11/16 x 5/16 section, and Size 4 Wide to 7 are in a 3/4 x 5/16 section.

The Easyfit Race retails at £23.00 per box/10 and is available to date from Richard Ash, Atlantic Equine, County Forge in Lambourn and Londonderry Forge Supplies in Yorkshire. Victory aluminium plates, still the most widely used racing plate in the UK, are available from these same companies and many more throughout the country.

For further information, please contact Richard Ash on 01458 850653 or Atlantic Equine Ltd on 01327 314880.

Over 30 years of equine nutritional research, clinical trials and field testing have gone into every cup of Farrier's Formula®. The nutrients in Farrier’s Formula® Double Concentrate important for a healthy hoof are provided at twice the concentration compared to original Farrier’s Formula®, delivering twice the number of daily feedings compared to original Farrier’s Formula®. Farrier's Formula® Double Concentrate provides nutrients such as phospholipids, omega fatty acids, and important amino acid “protein building blocks” that enable horses to build strong structural and connective tissue proteins important for healthy hoof structure and growth.

This course is focused on assessing the sport horse’s limbs and feet, and particularly helping those with less than ideal conformation and lameness issues.

Course size and location
These intensive one day courses are designed for farriers and veterinarians in small groups with up to twelve participants.

For the past twelve months, the staff at The Horse Trust in England’s Chiltern Hills have been using Farrier’s Formula®, a supplement designed to strengthen the hoof and improve the hair coat, on selected elderly horses with problem feet.
“Without exception, there has been not only been a noticeable improvement in their hoof growth and quality but also in their coats and maintenance of bodyweight”, says Brigadier Paul Jepson.
Tessa is a good example. The 14.1 hh grey mare is 32 years old and has been at the Home of Rest for Horses since 1999. “Tessa’s generally fit and well, but she’s had problems with seedy toe for the last three years,” says the Trust’s Chief Executive, Jeanette Allen. “Since being on Farrier’s Formula®, there has been a big improvement in the condition of Tessa’s hooves,” she adds.
According to Karen Zetsche, European Sales Representative of the supplement’s manufacturer, Life Data Labs, Inc., “The Trust’s work goes way beyond caring for the horses at its sanctuary. It has become the largest provider of equine welfare and research grants in the UK, and so it’s a priviledge for us to be able to help a little in return.”
The Trust depends on donations to fund its work and also relies on volunteers to help out both in the yard and in its offices. As a result of the current financial crisis, The Horse Trust is more in need of donations than ever.
