Chris Edwards, farrier to Sir Michael Stoute, completed a hat-trick of Derby winners when he plated Workforce for the Epsom race on June 5th.

Following the wins of Benny The Dip for John Gosden in 1997 and North Light, also for Sir Michael Stoute, in 2004, Workforce stormed into the record books with a runaway seven length win.

Chris was down at the start in his tails to ensure that nothing went wrong at the last minute and so, travelling back in a vehicle, he could only see the horse's backside as he chased At First Sight after Tattenham Corner, then galloped clear to win in a course record time.

Chris plated all his Derby winners in Victory aluminium racing plates and, as a memento of the occasion, was presented with a magnum of champagne by Tony Lindsell, director of Atlantic Equine Ltd, the U.K. importer and distributor of the Victory Racing Plate Company.

A customised label read: ‘Chris Edwards, Farrier, Workforce, The Derby 2010’ and was illustrated with the colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, the owner, as worn by jockey Ryan Moore on the day.

“This is very special,” said Chris. “It will go on the mantelpiece alongside my previous Victory magnums. The Atlantic Equine slogan ‘The Champions wear Victory’ is spot-on”.

Thousands of horses and ponies have been helped to recovery from potentially life-threatening attacks of laminitis by a farrier’s chance encounter with a thermoplastic material. Used within the medical industry, the highly adaptable, mouldable material led to the development of a unique range of horseshoes which mould to support the foot.

Now, Poynton Ltd, designers and manufacturers of the Imprint® range of therapeutic and more recently, sport horseshoes, is celebrating its 10th birthday. Says Andrew Poynton, who developed the shoes, “Many companies have started in a similar way, but don’t seem to have survived very long, so to be where we are now and still growing stronger, feels like a major achievement. We started with three sizes and now manufacture over forty variations of type and size, from the Imprint® First range of laminitic shoes and corrective shoes for delicate foal feet, through to the latest Imprint® Sport shoe, suitable for competing in all disciplines, including racing.”

Used by vets and farriers worldwide, the Imprint® First range has revolutionised the way laminitic horses and ponies are treated. Veterinary surgeon Richard Stephenson, examiner for the WCF, has been using the shoes since they were first available. He comments,

Tilly, a ride and drive Welsh Cob had never suffered from laminitis, but at the age of 11, just as she was due to foal she had a very serious attack. Says owner Tommy Coles,

“Tilly had never had laminits before, one day she was fine, but by the evening of the next, she could barely walk. We lost the foal and were trying everything we could but she was not improving, she could not bear to stand. Our farrier called Andrew, who immediately assured us that his top priority was the welfare of the horse and that he would commence treatment only if he felt she would benefit. The initial work he did was to get some circulation back to the feet, but as soon as the Imprint® shoes went on, Tilly was able to stand and walk a few steps. It took about a year of regular visits and a lot of hard work to keep the feet clear of infection, but eventually the hoof grew back and she is now in heart bar shoes and I am able to drive her again. I am sure without the Imprint® shoes it is highly unlikely that she would still be with us.”

Andrew Poynton is a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers and is in demand across the world to lecture and train vets and farriers in his approach to the treatment of laminitis.

The Hoof Boot market is here to stay and is growing – and  farriers can now make some profit from it.
Pricing of the  Cavallo hoof boots has been structured to allow farriers to make a respectable margin on their sale. With a recommended retail price of £99.95 (£85.06 plus VAT), these boots are available to farriers from Atlantic Equine or your local supplier for  around £62.50 plus VAT.
“Farriers are obviously the best people to recommend hoof boots,” said Tony Lindsell of Atlantic Equine. “They can advise whether their use is appropriate for any  given horse, can fit the boot to the correct size, and will, of course, trim the hoof in preparation for wearing the boot. In the context of all these added services, there is no reason why a farrier should not charge the full recommended retail price for the boots.”
The Cavallo hoof boots are now available in a number of versions, all including pastern wraps. The original ‘Simple’ all-purpose, all-terrain boot, with front loading and two velcro  closures,  has been hugely popular with riders over recent years and can now be bought in Brown (Sizes 3,4 and 5) and Pink (Sizes 0 – 3), as well as the original Black.
A new boot has been added to the Cavallo range, the Sport. This is a lighter boot with a less pronounced tread pattern, suitable for use on less challenging terrain. The Sport has a polyester and leather upper, and reflective piping around the boot. It retains the very effective and simple front-loading, but has a single velcro closure with security tab. The Sport is expected to be popular with those who want to see ‘fashion’ as well as function on their horse’s feet, and is currently available in Sizes 3, 4 and 5.

Desperation took over December 2008 when Muriel Colquhoun’s short coupled, over active horse with a big movement, pulled his front shoes off for the umpteenth time! Trainers and Farriers really appreciate the Kings Plate Extra Sound because comfort for the horse is an important part of their success. On the foot surface, the seating out is increased and extends forward towards the back of the clip to avoid pressre in the toe. The nail holes are positioned coarser than the standard Kings Plate to produce strong nailing and the toe is designed a little flatter, to keep the tow short when fitting.

Horse owners across the disciplines being converted to the Imprint Sport shoe include eventing legend Jane Holderness-Roddam. “We have been running one horse which had problem feet, for a year now in the Imprint Sport shoes. Without them he would not have been able to run as he was too sore with nails.”
